  1. Run ScanDiskwpe1.jpg (9697 bytes)

ScanDisk is a disk repair tool that searches the file system on your hard disk for errors such as lost file fragments and cross-linked files. ScanDisk can be set to automatically repair these errors, and a thorough scan can check the write integrity of each sector on your hard disk.  For optimum performance, you should run the thorough ScanDisk each month and run the standard ScanDisk weekly and after each abnormal shutdown.

  2. Perform Disk Cleanupwpe5.jpg (10154 bytes)

Disk Cleanup is a Windows 98 tool that searches for and deletes temporary Internet Files, downloaded program files, temporary files, and files in your recycle bin.

  3. Delete FrontPage Temp Files wpe6.jpg (2003 bytes)

Every time that you use FrontPage, there are files placed in the FrontPage temp folder. Running Disk Cleanup will not remove these files; these files must be manually deleted.

  4. Defrag Hard Drive wpe7.jpg (3987 bytes)

The most efficient method for reading/writing files is to arrange them in contiguous clusters on your hard drive; however, as you delete old files and save new ones, your files may become fragmented.  In an effort to allocate the required file space, newly saved files may be spread across several clusters instead of written on contiguous bands.   Defragging your hard drive reassigns files to contiguous clusters, enabling the read/write heads to function much faster.  For optimum performance, you should defrag your hard drive each week.

  5. Update Anti-virus Softwarevbugs.gif (1966 bytes)

The HUB periodically sends out a reminder to update your F-Prot anti-virus software.  These upgrades are vital to maintaining a virus-free hard drive.

  6. Make a Backup of Data Files on Network or ZIP/JAZ Disk wpe8.jpg (5267 bytes)
Windows 98 includes a backup system tool which permits you to back up your entire hard drive or selected files in expanded or compressed format to a designated location.   Each faculty member has file storage space on the Alpha server which can be used for storing backup files.  Also, ZIP(100 or 250 MB)/JAZ (1 or 2 GB) disks or CD-ROMs (650 MB) can be used to store your backup files.

Updating Anti-virus Software

These directions are modified from the HUB instructions available under Clayton State University Software on your Start menu.

Note:  To upgrade your F-Secure Anti-virus software, you must be logged into the network on campus.  Please make sure that you have already removed Dr. Solomon’s Antivirus Toolkit.

  1. Click on the Setup folder under Anti-Virus (Windows95) on the Clayton State University Software menu under Programs on the Start menu.

  1. Double click on the setupex icon.

  1. The installation will begin. At some point, it may prompt you for a path for the Disk2 installation disks. If so, enter the path below (Windows’ Copy/Paste routine works great for this!! <hint>): \\Socrates\software\Virus\Win95\AVTK\DISK2 If it asks for anymore, simply change DISK2 in the above link, to whatever disk set it is calling for.
  1. When installation is through, you’ll be prompted for some licensing information. Enter your name, Clayton State University for the organization, and your computer’s name. If you do not know your computer’s name, refer to the instructions following the F-Secure installation below.

Your computer has a name! So, what is it?

Finding out your computer’s name is simple. All you need to do is RIGHT-click on the link entitled "Network Neighborhood" and select "Properties". Click the "Identification" tab to find out the name of your computer. Press the ESC key to close the Network Properties window
