Run ScanDisk
ScanDisk is a disk repair tool that searches the file system on your hard disk for errors
such as lost file fragments and cross-linked files. ScanDisk can be set to automatically
repair these errors, and a thorough scan can check the write integrity of each sector on
your hard disk. For optimum performance, you should run the thorough ScanDisk each
month and run the standard ScanDisk weekly and after each abnormal shutdown.
Perform Disk Cleanup
Disk Cleanup is a Windows 98 tool that searches for and deletes temporary Internet Files,
downloaded program files, temporary files, and files in your recycle bin.
Delete FrontPage Temp Files

Every time that you use FrontPage, there are files placed in the FrontPage temp folder.
Running Disk Cleanup will not remove these files; these files must be manually deleted.
Defrag Hard Drive
The most efficient method for reading/writing files is to arrange them in contiguous
clusters on your hard drive; however, as you delete old files and save new ones, your
files may become fragmented. In an effort to allocate the required file space, newly
saved files may be spread across several clusters instead of written on contiguous bands.
Defragging your hard drive reassigns files to contiguous clusters, enabling the
read/write heads to function much faster. For optimum performance, you should defrag
your hard drive each week.
Update Anti-virus
Software
The HUB periodically sends out a reminder to update your F-Prot anti-virus software.
These upgrades are vital to maintaining a virus-free hard drive.
Make
a Backup of Data Files on Network or ZIP/JAZ Disk
Windows 98 includes a backup system tool which permits you to back up your entire hard
drive or selected files in expanded or compressed format to a designated location.
Each faculty member has file storage space on the Alpha server which can be used for
storing backup files. Also, ZIP(100 or 250 MB)/JAZ (1 or 2 GB) disks or CD-ROMs (650
MB) can be used to store your backup files.
Click on ScanDisk under System Tools on the Accessories menu under Programs on the Start menu.

Click in the radio button corresponding to Thorough scan, click in the checkbox labeled Automatically fix errors, then click on the Options button.

Click in the radio button corresponding to Data area only,
click in the checkbox labeled Do not repair bad sectors in hidden and system files,
then click OK.
Note: Although ScanDisk can test system and hidden files, it typically
cannot repair them. Restricting the scanning to the data area will reduce the scan
time without compromising the effectiveness of the tool.

Click on the Advanced button.

Verify that the following options are selected, then click OK.

Click on the Start button.

A progress bar will display the status of the disk scan.

Click on Disk Cleanup under System Tools on the Accessories menu under Programs on the Start menu.

Click OK.

When prompted to delete the files, click Yes.

Open Windows Explorer.
